Who We Are

Established in 2000, the Bradenton Charter School serves students in grades 3 through 8 and has an educational objective unique in Manatee County. The school is publicly funded and consequently, WE ARE FREE.

The school offers students differentiated instruction and flexible grouping at each grade level. Students have opportunities to work in small groups in order to review work, improve skills and have their instructional needs met. Teachers promote learning by building on students' knowledge base and thus create a rich curriculum. It is a fundamental that the more you know, the more you are able to learn.

Today, over 70% of employment requires some degree of licensing, certification of other accreditation. Students with strong foundations and broad knowledge bases are better equipped to handle changing situations and develop continued interests and hobbies. Our goal is to give children these tools and to do so in a caring, supportive environment.

The school is looking for children who can benefit from our small environment, and we have the capacity for 104 students in five classrooms.

Why It Works

Schools can be stressful, and for various reasons many parents and students are frustrated, or put off by their experiences. Our parents and students have said that:

  • Children have "knowledge poverty" due to public school focus on benchmark tests
  • Just as children settle down, they have to change classes
  • Bullying is allowed because schools are too large and cannot control their populations
  • Lessons are rushed and children don't understand what is asked of them
  • Homework is over used and ends up teaching the lessons of what should have been taught in class
  • Children have too many electives that don't help students master basic skills

Our school addresses these problems.  We require students to focus on core subjects which are taught by highly qualified individuals with diverse backgrounds and interests.  The school day is organized, chaos free, and the school setting is small, casual and friendly.  The school promotes a safe environment where bullying is not tolerated, and we have an open door, family oriented visitation policy.  The best way for parents to stay informed is to be able to meet teachers and visit the school easily, without barriers.

Students who feel good about themselves tend to show it in their work. Children who know what is expected of them (what, when and where), tend to be more confident and satisfied. Children who are dealt with honestly and are expected to take responsibility for their learning, tend to be appreciative and more pragmatic in their approaches to learning. It takes a village to properly educate a student and we try to be that village.

Who Are Our Students

The student body ranges from advanced students to remedial. The curriculum is aligned to the Sunshine State Standards, and the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test is given to all children.

The school is an alternative for students who: Do better in smaller classes, or function more effectively in a smaller educational setting; Come from homes where parents are dissatisfied with traditional schools; Are seeking an alternative placement; May not be reaching their full academic potential; Are less willing or proficient at handling the activities or large groups of today's classes.

The school's class sizes are no more than 18 students for grades 3 & 4 and 22 students per class in grades 5 through 8.

Awards

The school has been a recipient of the Florida Department of Education's School Recognition Award and was honored as one of the top 50 combination schools in Florida.  In 2004, Mr. Donnelly, the school's principal, was honored as a School Administrator of the Year Finalist by the Florida African American Education Alliance.

How Expensive is Tuition

The school is publicly funded. No tuition or attendance fees are ever paid.  WE ARE FREE.

What is the Process

Parents and children complete applications and supply basic information in an interview process. The process is simple, straightforward and informal. Applications may be obtained in the front Office, Via Facsimile/U.S. Post or through this web page:  http://www.bradentoncharterschool.com/Student%20Application%202010M.pdf.

Examples of Our Integrated Curriculum

"Readers For Life" - A school-wide focus on grade leveled literature. The selections are chosen to inspire students to want to read and range from serious and heartfelt topics to fun and ridiculous. An example of the 3rd and 4th grades reading list includes: Frankenstein, by Mary Shelly; A Dog's Life: The Autobiography of a Stray, by Ann Martin; Dillon Dillon by Kate Banks; The Tiger Rising by Kate DiCamillo; The Secret Garden by Frances Burnett; Black Beauty by Anna Sewell; and The Time Machine by H.G. Wells.

Math is cumulative and in order for students to do well as they move into algebra and beyond, it is important for them to practice skills and show math fluency.  The beginning of every 90 minute math class is dedicated to an intensive review of core math facts.  The remainder of the period focuses on grade level lessons.

"Our Expanding World" - A school-wide focus on the world's peoples, places, environment, geography, arts, foods, and history. The objectives are to promote reading, writing, math, science, and social studies in a "world" context that offers students opportunities to involve themselves in projects that interest them.

Technology is supplemental to the core curriculum and is used to motivate, and develop independent and creative work.  Students are encouraged to explore the internet safely and responsibly, and to express their views and opinions.
